I love it when a plan comes together. Earlier this spring, when Kate and I were talking about me photographing her wedding in September, she asked if I ever travel back to DC. She’d seen and liked this at home engagement session that I blogged in the fall, and was interested in doing something similar. After living in DC for three years, there’s a bit of my heart that belongs there. I hadn’t been back for a few years, so I was itching for a reason to go. When I considered the possibility of making some extra-meaningful at home engagement photos for this pair, and added in one friend’s bachelorette party and my college roommate’s impending move to the west coast, I took my only free weekend between then and August and booked myself a plane ticket down to DC. It was so worth it.
While spending time with Kate and Josh, I got to hear about another plan – the one that lead to their engagement. Josh “left for work” one morning, telling Kate he’d be home a bit late, as he planned to get a drink with a friend. Instead, he headed straight to the airport, flew to Boston, took Kate’s parents and sister out to lunch in the North End where he asked for their blessing, and then flew back to DC, with Kate none the wiser.
I was thrilled to photograph them at home – in their backyard where Josh is planting a garden, doing a little back-alley dancing, cuddling on their couch with their cute pup Harper, and out in their Capitol Hill neighborhood. Here are a few favorites from our time together.
these are lovely, kelly! The images in their home feel very honest and relaxed.
