My heart was all aflutter with anticipation when I saw Blair and Courtney appear on the path along the Charles River Esplanade and make their way out onto the dock. Their dock. Blair told me that before they were a couple, they’d take runs and meet each other at this particular spot.
Blair and Courtney’s love story winds through some of Boston’s most iconic places – from Esplanade to the top of the Prudential Center, Harvard Square to Fenway. But their ending up together was not a sure thing.
As Blair told me over the winter, they met when he was on his way to what would turn out to be his 30th surprise birthday party. Riding the red line, a man started harassing him. At Harvard Station, the guy attacked Blair, and Courtney stepped in and told him to knock it off. It ended with the man’s arrest, and both Blair and Courtney were later subpoenaed to appear in court.
Their first date was a Red Sox game, followed by impromptu drinks at the top of the Pru. But things didn’t quite align, and the relationship didn’t get off the ground. Yet there was something undeniable there, and they kept in touch, meeting up at what they now affectionately refer to as “our dock.”
So when it came time to propose, Blair knew only one spot would do. Though these two now live on the west coast, they came back to Boston for the weekend. Boston shone so brightly that day, with a warm sun and blooming trees. As the sun sank low over Cambridge, Blair and Courtney sat down to take in the view. Slowly, the crowds began to dissipate. In the quiet of dusk, Blair got down on one knee and asked Courtney to marry him. They then excitedly called family, and rode the T to Harvard Square, where they had a dinner reservation waiting.
