Mary sat in the weak window light of the overcast day. She opened the envelope with her name on it, and took out two handwritten pages. Earlier, her hands had danced with nervous, vibrating energy as her friends helped with her sash and the flowers for her hair. Now, the pages stilled her hands. For this moment, everything slowed as she read Andrew’s words.
Mary arrived to the small country church she had grown up attending. She and her bridesmaids were full of smiles and anticipation. But as she reached the door to the church, her face crumpled. The weight of the moment descended, and she turned to her brother for a hug. While Mary hadn’t planned on anyone walking her down the aisle, she asked him to make this walk with her. Weddings can be so full of emotion, and sometimes it’s your own that catch you off guard.
Andrew greeted Mary at the altar with a huge smile, which she returned. After the vows and the kiss, they welcomed their guests together on the porch of the church. As children threw rose petals, Andrew and Mary dashed to the vintage Trans Am he had spent the previous year restoring. They roared away, waving to the guests.
We met at the overlook above the Fruitlands Museum to make some portraits of the two of them along with the car. I loved the way the breeze picked up Mary’s dress and the ribbons of her lush colorful bouquet in some of the images. Andrew was only too happy to cuddle her close from the cold.
During the reception, we heard about how Andrew and Mary met, and how that story of meeting at Dunkin’ Donuts landed them on Boston.com. But more importantly, we heard about how these two balance each other and are such good friends and partners. And then the party really got started, with family and friends all out on the dance floor.
