Amy, a West Coast girl, and Ben, an East Coast boy, met in the nation’s capital as students at Georgetown. They hit it off when they discovered they had the same goal of learning all the world’s capitals. This interest in the world has taken them on many adventures, including early on when they studied abroad and then were evacuated from Egypt during the start of the Arab spring.
After nine years together, they invited their closest friends and family to their intimate backyard Cape Cod wedding. The property has been in Ben’s family since he was a baby, and he spent his summers there with his cousins. Guests traveled to this special place from up and down both coasts and across the ocean.
They held their ceremony on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. Bear, the family dog, served as honorary ring bearer. Their friend and officiant channeled Neil deGrasse Tyson when he talked about the cosmic forces that brought them together and also forged the metal of the rings they were about to exchange. A reading from Neil Gaiman told us “at weddings we imagine the future / because it’s all about ‘what happened next?'”
The immediate next is that Amy, Ben and their guests enjoyed French 75s, Sidecars and lobster rolls. They were toasted and welcomed into each other’s families. They danced the hora and ended the reception with sparklers and fireworks.
The more distant next is that after Amy and Ben return from their honeymoon on an African safari and visiting the Maldives, they’ll each begin new adventures. Amy will teach English in Amman, Jordan while Ben starts medical school here in the US. To borrow a line from Amy’s father’s toast “May you always enjoy the strength of your bond as the solid ground of your dreams and as your fount of creativity wherever your plans may lead you.”
