Laura and Tom are a smart, gracious, and playful couple. And they love a party. Specifically hosting parties. So when it came to their wedding, they had a prime opportunity to create a fun and welcoming event that combined the things they love for their community of friends and family.
These two Boston-dwellers chose the Liberty Hotel for their venue. With iconic city views out the windows, Tom and Laura got ready with their closest friends. After a champagne toast (because there’s always time for champagne), Laura’s bridesmaids helped her don her elegant gown, and promptly teared up at the sight.
Because they wanted to enjoy the party with their guests, Laura and Tom chose to see each other and do their portraits before the ceremony. Later, as guests arrived, the sounds of New Orleans jazz harkened to their annual Mardi Gras party. In the intimacy of the courtyard, a friend led the ceremony and included his own top 10 tips for happiness in marriage – a list that brought much laughter from the crowd. After being declared married, Laura and Tom danced back up the aisle, and then shared a second kiss.
Cocktail hour was held in the moody ambiance of the atrium. Highlighting their interest in politics and cocktails, their signature drink was the Ward 8 – named after the eighth ward political boss Martin Lomasney. A sign at the bar shared the story of how Lomasney was christened the “Mahatma” by the Boston Evening Transcript for his control over the West End neighborhood where the Liberty Hotel resides, and encouraged guests to drink one in his (and more importantly their) honor.
The start of their reception felt like a candle-lit dinner party. As guests ate, Laura and Tom drifted from table to table to welcome everyone. The toasts were some of best and funniest I’ve heard, and gave lie to the commonly-given advice that toasts should have a strict three-minute limit. Where Tom and Laura didn’t waste any time was getting onto the dance floor after the last of the formalities.
