Being a wedding photographer, especially this time of year when I’m hearing from lots of newly-engaged couples, is a little like being on a series of first dates. There’s the spark of interest, the first (usually e-mail) contact. You share a little of your story and I share a little of mine. Maybe there’s an instant sense of ease and understanding, a feeling like you’ve found someone you’re supposed to know, and an excitement that you’ll get to know more of them. That’s how I felt when I heard from Melissa and Ben, and was so thrilled to be invited to photograph their New Hampshire wedding this past fall.
Looking back on my notes from the day, the phrase that stands out is “heartfelt everything.” Melissa and Ben were very deliberate in their wedding choices, including touches both sentimental (Melissa donned a necklace worn by three generations of brides in her family) and humorous (Ben’s Batman cufflinks). It was important to them to have an inclusive celebration and invite the full participation of their guests. A family friend led the service, during which their parents and guests were asked to affirm Melissa and Ben’s union. During the reception, their siblings delivered sweet and funny toasts, Melissa and Ben shared their wedding cake with Melissa’s father (who was celebrating his birthday), and her brother sang a slow song to open the dance floor to all the guests. And throughout the day, what made it really sparkle, were the gigantic smiles of Melissa and Ben as they soaked it all in.
