Three years and one day ago, Ian proposed. In the rain, by a waterfall, down on one knee, with his grandmother’s ring. Almost sounds good enough to be in a movie. Two years ago today, Ian and I got married on a sunny morning in a beautiful garden. Then we celebrated with brunch and a bride’s team vs. groom’s team wiffle ball game.* One year ago, we marked our first anniversary with a weekend trip to Maine. We hiked and kayaked, indulged in lobster (me) and steak (Ian), and just enjoyed ourselves away from our tiny Boston apartment.

We are celebrating two years today, from 13 time zones apart. Ian is in Japan, visiting friends and doing some solo travel, while I’m at home. I am a little sad to be missing this trip and to be apart on our anniversary, it’s true. But one of the things that I absolutely love and value about our marriage is that we support and encourage each other in our adventures, together and apart. Whether that is planning a trip, embarking on a PhD program, or opening a business. Opportunities to go to Japan don’t come along every day, and I really wanted him to have the experience (and maybe not-so-secretly hoping he would acquire a taste for sushi while he was there).

*Wondering who won the game? The bride’s team of course! Ian claims it was due to the skill of my brothers-in-law. The rule that I couldn’t get out didn’t hurt either.

Thanks, Meg! I’m crossing my fingers!

Happy Anniversary, Kelly! (and Ian!) Maybe when Ian gets back you can celebrate at a sushi restaurant…
