I was recently speaking with a newly-engaged friend, and I was reminded of the flood of questions that immediately hits you, soon followed by the weight of expectations. It’s easy to think that things have to be done in a certain way, because that’s what your family, friends, and the internet are telling you.
But if you’re looking for a different way, take heart. You aren’t alone. Here are some weddings that I’ve been privileged to photograph, highlighting some of the unconventional choices they’ve made.
Kristina and Joe held their wedding on a Thursday, at their favorite neighborhood restaurant. They had Cocek Brass Band lead their guests in a parade from their ceremony to the reception.
At Emily and Dave’s backyard Martha’s Vineyard wedding, Emily wore her gown for about two hours, before donning a purple sundress. After their vows and an al fresco meal, the intimately-sized group headed to the beach for a swim.
Mariko and Aaron chose to say their vows in front of only their immediate family and closest friends, at one of their favorite restaurants. After sharing a meal together, and cake and champagne at their apartment, they joined more friends for an after-party at Eastern Standard.
Erin and Peter paired the traditional and untraditional at their celebration. Their strong shared faith led them to celebrate their wedding mass at St. Cecilia’s in Boston. Their sense of fun led them to choose food-truck catering, complete with a ceremonial cutting of a Cookie Monstah ice-cream sandwich.
Dith and Eli wore glasses (seriously, how often do you see a wedding couple in glasses) at their Willowdale Estate wedding, and served home-brew at the bar.
At Sam and AJ’s Eisenhower House wedding, the bridesmaids all picked their own dresses, and looked gorgeous. Sam and AJ walked down the aisle together as a sign of their equality within their relationship. In the evening, when many couples choose to sneak away for a few sunset photos, they invited all their guests to join them in enjoying the view.
