Melinda and Matt’s Boston City Hall winter wedding fell close to their two-year anniversary. In our first call, they told me the progression from dating to engaged didn’t feel fast – instead it was fun and easy and natural. They also told me that that “big weddings can be fun but it’s not us” and that they were more excited to be married than to get married. After a few false starts with planning, they conceived of a low-key day where they’d put on their Sunday best and head to city hall with both their moms and Matt’s sister. Afterwards, they’d join friends at The Street bar at The Newbury, a sentimental location where they had their first date and where Matt proposed, and then head to Grill 23 for a celebratory dinner with family.
After a very rainy 2023 wedding season, it was such a pleasant change of pace to photograph on a sunny and relatively mild January day. We walked through the public garden before ubering to city hall plaza, and made some portraits in each spot. Every time I photograph at Boston City Hall, I like it more and more. The Brutalist architecture evokes a lot of strong feelings, not all positive. Melinda and Matt laughingly called the building “grotesque.” But the lines and light always seem to offer opportunities for interesting photographs. And the brief standard ceremony they conduct there has surprisingly moving vows. I couldn’t have kicked off my 2024 wedding season with a kinder, more welcoming bunch of folks.
