Ask any wedding photographer in Boston if they have a dream venue at which to photograph, and I’m guessing you’ll hear the Boston Public Library. From the elegant courtyard, to the grand staircase guarded by twin lion sculptures, to the iconic Bates Hall with its rows of tables with green glass lamps, it’s a treasure-trove of photographic possibility. So I was of course thrilled when Lauren and Brendan first reached out to me about photographing their Boston Public Library wedding.
But in the course of working together, I found even more beauty in their relationship and how they infused their values into their wedding celebration. Before the wedding, Lauren and Brendan told me that they had spent the most time trying to find their venue. Through their careers, they want to make a positive impact in the world. And for their wedding, they wanted to hold it in a place that was not only beautiful, but had some civic purpose and could reflect how a married couple can serve their community.
The importance of family was another guiding light in their planning. They chose to get ready at the home Lauren grew up in and to marry at her home church in Hingham, where family members provided the prelude and postlude music. Taking a page from her sister’s wedding, they treated guests to ice cream after the ceremony, while we got a head-start into Boston to make some portraits. They rejoined their guests for cocktail hour in the courtyard, before being toasted by their brother, sister and father during dinner.
These two share a kindness and generosity of spirit, which made them a delight to work with. And each is very attentive to the other, which was apparent in many small moments throughout the day and made them a delight to photograph.
