For nine days, the forecast was for rain. And then the day before a glimmer of hope – rain clearing around 4pm – just the time planned for their intimate Cape Cod wedding. I drove out to the Cape under grey clouds, hoping for the best, not sure if my final destination would be Fisher Beach in Truro or a nearby rental house in Wellfleet. It was looking promising, so the call was made for the beach. By the time we all arrived, there were blue skies and brilliant sunshine.

Catherine and Peter are both professional musicians – she’s a cellist and he plays the trombone – so they’re used to performing in front of crowds. But for their wedding, they chose to get married in front of just 16 friends and family. Peter’s sister and brother-in-law, also professional musicians, played during the ceremony. They also included one of my favorite wedding readings by Roy Croft, which ends, very appropriately:

I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple:
Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song…

The next day, they hosted more friends and family for cocktails, dinner, and dancing at Winslow’s Tavern. They were serenaded throughout the evening by a jazz quartet. The evening ended with Peter’s sister and brother-in-law playing again – this time singing a silly song written especially for Catherine and Peter that had the entire assembly laughing.
