When I first spoke with Dasha and Steven about their wedding, they were planning a city hall ceremony followed by a restaurant reception. But like most weddings that happened after March of 2020, they had to do some radical re-imagining. Thus, they celebrated their tiny Boston wedding with a backyard garden ceremony and dinner party on their front deck.
I arrived just as Steven and Dasha were finishing with the set-up. I loved seeing all ways they found to bring personal touches to the day, from garden they had cultivated through spring and summer, to the special table adornments collected from friends, and the small pottery vases and plates made by Dasha (featuring their original wedding date on the bottom!) When rain appeared in the forecast a few days before, Dasha asked “how can we make this fun?” and bought clear rain parasols for their guests, and a pink one for her and Steven. It was a good thing, as a light rain started to fall just as the ceremony started.
The ceremony was personal and poignant, with guests warming the rings and offering blessings, and Dasha and Steven exchanging emotional vows they’d written themselves. After the kiss and hugs, we made a few group portraits, and Dasha and Steven were showered with flower petals. From there, everyone moved upstairs to the deck, which was adorned in a show-stopping floral installation. By candlelight, they enjoyed champagne, a multi-course meal prepared by a personal chef and a cake from one of their favorite bakeries. It was a lovely, intimate and emotion-filled celebration, and I can’t imagine a more beautiful way to make memories in their first home together.
